What Is Bocchi the Rock? The Manga and the Anime

Bocchi the Rock! is the story of a shy girl, a loud band and the friends who pull her onto the stage. Here is where it comes from, in a few short steps, and why we put it on our designs.

Where did Bocchi the Rock! start?

It started as a manga. Bocchi the Rock! is a four-panel comedy manga, the yonkoma kind, written and drawn by Aki Hamaji. Houbunsha publishes it in the seinen magazine Manga Time Kirara Max. It first appeared as a guest work in December 2017, and regular serialisation began in March 2018.

When did the anime come out?

The anime came from the studio CloverWorks. It ran for 12 episodes, from October 9 to December 25, 2022, directed by Keiichirō Saitō. Its opening theme, "Seishun Complex", is performed by Kessoku Band, the band at the heart of the story.

Can I read it in English?

Yes. Yen Press licensed the manga in English, and volume 1 came out on October 17, 2023.

What is the story about?

Hitori Gotoh plays guitar alone in her room and finds talking to people very hard. Her nickname, "Bocchi", comes from hitoribocchi, being alone. Then Nijika Ijichi pulls her into her band, Kessoku Band, and the story follows what happens next: rehearsals, nerves, gigs and friendship.

Why does it work so well on merch?

• Four colours, four members: pink for Hitori, gold for Nijika, blue for Ryo and red for Kita. Our designs use those colours, so each member is easy to spot.
• Big faces, bold lines: the show's flat, clean style reads well from across a room.
• Real feelings: a nervous girl who still walks on stage is easy to love.
